ABOUT US

AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND’S VACCINATION LANDSCAPE

Aotearoa New Zealand has a robust vaccination history, supported by the National Immunisation Schedule, which provides a series of publicly funded vaccines for infants, children, pregnant people, and older adults. However, effectively controlling vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) requires consistently high rates of timely vaccination across the population.

When community vaccine coverage falls below critical thresholds, the risk of VPD outbreaks increases significantly. Recent outbreaks of measles and pertussis have underscored the importance of maintaining high immunisation rates. Further, notable immunity gaps persist in New Zealand, particularly among tamariki Māori and Pacific children, highlighting the need for a more equitable approach to vaccine coverage.
To address these challenges, a dynamic and equity-focused research environment is essential. Such an environment would enable early detection of changing immunisation patterns, barriers to vaccine uptake, and emerging research priorities.

THE ROLE OF IMMCOR

ImmCoR was established to meet this need. By uniting key immunisation stakeholders across Aotearoa, ImmCoR provides a collaborative platform to identify and address the evolving immunisation needs of communities. The network facilitates the development of research questions, secures funding, and conducts research within a broader, coordinated research framework.

Through this collaborative approach, ImmCoR aims to ensure that all communities, especially those facing disparities, are supported with effective, timely, and equitable immunisation strategies.

MEETINGS

Network members meet four times a year, once a year in person and three times a year online.

THE ImmCoR TOHU

The ImmCoR tohu, designed by Luke Pilkinton-Ching, incorporates the various facets of our work. The colour palette pays homage to the hues found within many wharenui throughout the motu, representing the importance of supporting equitable vaccination uptake in the work that we do. The small symbols that make up the map of Aotearoa symbolise connection and collaboration of the researchers, health professionals, and community groups that make up the ImmCoR network.
